Rue en Rose: An Au Pair in ParisI bought a one-way ticket to the City of Light, and traveled to 15 countries, dancing at a royal masquerade ball, climbed World War 2 bunkers, and lost myself (and then found myself) in the most beautiful city in the world.
I also brought along my dSLR and a notebook to record these adventures. Editing on Adobe Lightroom and dipping into the world of CSS and HTML on Blogger, I successfully curated a blog followed by travelers and aspiring au pairs alike. (And my grandmother, who printed every post I wrote just in case the Internet died.) Not only did I learn so much about the delicious French culture, but some life lessons in adaptability, time management, working through language barriers, and being a confident solo world traveler. So why don't you take a walk down a rue in Paris with me. I swear the smells alone will be worth it. |
An excerpt from "Falling in Love with the 3rd Arrondisement"
"Paris is divided into 20 arrondisements, and I made it my goal when I moved here to explore each and every last one. Well, the search has officially ended; I have found my one true love. Give me no riversides, no monuments, or sloping hills. The 3rd arrondissement is where my heart belongs.
Ode to her soft swelling streets, so blissfully empty in a tourist-packed city. Ode to her blossoming commercial district, full of concept shops and actually drinkable French coffee. Ode to the grunge mixed with the beauty, the rough living with the light. Ode to a place where vitrine after vitrine, I look in and see bits of my soul on display, in products and foods and slogans and artwork. Ode to a place that could care less as much as it cares so deeply." An excerpt from "Alone at Castle Vaux le Vicompte"
"You know those moments you've waited for your whole life, and when they finally come, they are just watered-down versions of your imagination? Not so here. The morning light moves like a young Grecian nymph in the crisp October air, dancing off the fluttering, crackly leaves and sprawling out across the dewy grass. A happy spattering of tittering birds echoes from within the rigid forest brigade standing guard around the chateau grounds. There is no other sound. It's the hushed quiet of a land brimming with secrets.
It's interrupted briefly by a large tour group exiting the chateau as I buy my ticket. But as I make my way toward the moat and the the great stone steps, I suddenly realize: I am alone a castle." |
